As a result, she decides to take it upon herself to find her friend Harriet Smith the same kind of match. She even persuades her to reject the wealthy farmer Robert Martin's marriage proposal. Emma wants her friend to have a gentlemanly marriage, whilst Harriet cannot resist her love for Mr. Martin. Emma's brother-in-law, Mr. Knightley, monitors her efforts to find a marriage and disapproves of them.
